Simplicity is a feature

A lot of developers I know and work with are constantly building for imaginary what ifs.

  • What if we need multiple providers later?
  • Perhaps we should abstract this now.
  • In the future we might need a queue here.
  • Maybe this should support five different use cases.
  • What if the product grows into something bigger?

And before you know it, a simple feature turns into a small framework. Not because the current problem asked for it, but because our brains like to run ahead of reality.

I think this is one of the most common traps in software engineering today.

We are very good at inventing complexity. We can always come up with one more edge case, one more extension point, one more layer of indirection, one more "just in case" abstraction. It feels responsible. It feels like what a senior engineer should do. It feels like we are thinking ahead.

But often we are not thinking ahead, we are simply avoiding commitment. Sometimes we are also scared that if the need shows up later, we will not have the time to deal with it properly. So we build for that imagined future now, just to feel safe.

Simple code forces you to be honest about the problem in front of you. Complex code gives you the comforting feeling that you are prepared for every possible future. Most of the time, that future never comes. And if it does come, it rarely arrives in the shape you predicted anyway. Software development is rarely as predictable as we like to pretend.

So now you are left with extra code, extra concepts, extra configuration, and extra mental overhead. Every new person touching that code has to pay the tax. Every future change has to move through layers that were added for a future that never happened.

This is why simplicity matters so much.

Simple software is easier to explain, debug, change, and delete.

That does not mean you should be naive. Of course you should think a little ahead. Of course you should avoid painting yourself into a corner. Of course some systems need careful design because the cost of changing them later is high.

But most code is not that.

Most code is a form, a job, a query, an API endpoint, a screen, a workflow, a report, a notification. It does not need an elaborate overengineered architecture. It needs to work, read clearly, and be easy to revise once reality gives you better information.

Reality is a much better architect than speculation.

I have seen this over and over again. Teams spend days discussing how to make something scalable, flexible, reusable, and future-proof before they even know whether the thing is useful. Then a month later the requirements change, the feature gets dropped, or the real bottleneck turns out to be somewhere else entirely. All that design work becomes waste.

There is also an ego component to this.

Simple solutions can feel unimpressive. They do not always give you that satisfying sense of cleverness. A plain controller, a small class, a straightforward query, a boring function name. Nothing to show off. Nothing to present as some grand architecture.

But boring code is often the best code.

It leaves room for the product. It leaves room for speed. It leaves room for other people, especially junior developers joining the project, to understand what is going on without needing a guided tour.

The hard part is not adding more.

The hard part is stopping when the solution is sufficient.

It takes confidence. It takes being okay with the fact that if the future changes, you can change the code too. Software is not carved into stone. We are allowed to revise it. In fact, that is one of its biggest strengths.

So the next time you catch yourself saying:

"What if one day we need..."

Pause.

  • Do we need it today?
  • Is there actual evidence this is coming?
  • What is the cost of waiting until the requirement is real?
  • What complexity are we adding right now in exchange for that guess?

A lot of the time, the right move is to do less.

  • Build the straightforward version.
  • Name things clearly.
  • Avoid premature abstractions.
  • Let duplication exist for a while.
  • Wait for the real pattern to show up.
  • Make the current use case work really well.

Then adjust when reality forces your hand. That is usually how good software gets built. Not by trying to predict everything. But by staying close to the problem, keeping things simple, and changing the design only when the need becomes real.
